The department was established in 1973-1974. The department has a well-established ‘Botanical Garden' and 'Museum'. Botanical garden dedicated to the collection, cultivation, preservation and display of an especially wide range of plants, which are typically labelled with their botanical names. It contain specialist plant collections such as cacti and other succulent plants, herb gardens, plants from particular region, and so on; there is a shadehouses, again with special collections such as tropical plants, alpine plants and other exotic plants. Most are at least partly open to the public, and may offer guided, educational displays, art exhibitions.
The department also has ‘Museum',with a collection of over 200 specimens representing all major groups of Plant Kingdom. The ‘Herbarium’ of the department is one of the finest assets.
Faculty include effective classroom teaching, academic advising and counseling of students, participation in departmental committee work, continuous development of the curriculum through assessment, applied research or scholarly activity, and service such as assisting in recruitment of students and initiatives designed to help students succeed academically, as well as other assigned duties. The department organizes varius activities to enhance the knowledge of the students like Seminars, Guest lecture programmes, Field visit, Invited talk from resource person, Awareness creating programme, Study tour, etc...
